Karachi: Three personnel of Pakistan’s Sindh Rangers and three militants were killed after heavily armed attackers stormed the paramilitary force’s headquarters in Karachi on Saturday, officials said.
The attack was preceded by multiple explosions on a major road in Karachi, an area that houses several universities and the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s offices. Gunfire was reported shortly afterwards.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho said security forces launched a counter-operation after the assault on the Sindh Rangers’ local headquarters, killing all three attackers. Three Rangers personnel also lost their lives in the exchange of fire.
A Reuters journalist at the scene reported that the gunfire had later stopped and the situation was brought under control.
The incident is being described as the biggest militant attack in Karachi since October 2024, when a bombing targeting a convoy of Chinese nationals killed two Chinese citizens.
While major Pakistani cities have witnessed relatively fewer militant attacks in recent years, violence has intensified in areas bordering Afghanistan, raising concerns that militant activity could once again spread to the country’s urban centres.
