New Delhi: Renowned shooter and coach Jaspal Rana, one of the key figures behind India’s success in pistol shooting, passed away on Friday at the age of 49. Rana, known for his uncompromising principles and determination, died at Max Hospital in Saket, Delhi, following complications related to a heart condition.

According to sources, Rana had recently undergone a stent procedure after doctors detected a blockage in his heart. A second medical procedure had reportedly been planned, but he passed away before it could take place, sending shockwaves through India’s sporting fraternity and the shooting community.

Jaspal Rana’s life mirrored the highs and lows of his distinguished sporting career. He first rose to prominence in 1994 when he won a gold medal at the World Shooting Championships, establishing himself as one of India’s brightest shooting talents.

He later added an Asian Games gold medal in the Centre Fire Pistol event and went on to enjoy the most successful phase of his career at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, where he clinched three gold medals for India.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Rana often acknowledged that he could have won several more medals for the country, including at the Olympic Games. In a surprising statistic for a shooter of his stature, he represented India at the Olympics only once, at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Beyond his achievements as a shooter, Rana made a lasting impact as a coach, playing a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of Indian shooters and contributing significantly to the country’s rise as a global force in the sport.

His death marks the end of an era in Indian shooting and leaves behind a legacy that inspired countless athletes across the country.
