Amritsar: The Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University has been summoned by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to present his case within 15 days over his controversial remarks on the uniqueness of Sikhs. The move follows several complaints from Sikh bodies, students, and members of the sangat.
The complaints include a video reel alleging that the VC used inappropriate words about Gurmat. Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said the distinct identity and personality of the Sikh community is the blessing of the Guru Sahibs. He added that the Takht Sahib has, in the past, invited anyone questioning this principle to present their side.
Referring to the December 2, 2024 Hukamnama, he said its spirit was to unite all factions for the larger interests of the Panth.“
“This is not the Panth’s fight but of the factions. It is wrong to call it a battle of the Panth. Akal Takht Sahib belongs to all factions and everyone should follow its orders,” he said.
He stressed that hukamnamas are drafted by the Panj Singh Sahiban in light of Gurmat, not at the will of any one person. “If the orders of December 2 are not followed, then the name of Akal Takht Sahib should not be used for political gains,” he said, adding that in recent times, factions have prioritised political interests over the dignity of the Akal Takht Sahib.
