New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (EC) will hold a press conference on Sunday amid opposition protests over allegations of “vote theft” raised by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and concerns regarding the Special Comprehensive Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR) in Bihar.
Officials said the subject of the press conference has not been disclosed yet, but it will address allegations levelled against the poll panel.
While it is not unusual for the commission to call a formal briefing on issues other than election schedules, the timing comes after Rahul Gandhi’s repeated accusations of voter data tampering in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana.
The EC has asked the Congress leader to provide affidavits with details of voters whose names were allegedly deleted or wrongly added to electoral rolls.
The commission also said Rahul Gandhi should apologise if he fails to submit evidence supporting his claims.
