Mumbai: Popular singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing, saying he will not take up any new work as a film singer. The announcement, made on Tuesday through a social media message, has left fans shocked, as the 38-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most in-demand voices in Hindi cinema today.
In his message, Singh thanked listeners for their support over the years and said he had decided to step away from playback singing. “Namaste, and happy new year to everyone. I want to thank all of you for giving me so much love as listeners over the years. I am happy to announce that I will not be taking up any new work as a playback singer. I am ending this chapter. It was a beautiful journey,” he wrote.
The singer clarified that while he is moving away from playback singing, he will continue to compose music independently and will also honour some of his existing commitments. He did not elaborate on the reasons behind his decision.
The announcement has triggered an emotional response from fans across social media platforms. Several users expressed disbelief and disappointment, with one writing that the decision had come “far too soon,” while another pleaded with the singer to reconsider, saying audiences needed his voice for many more years.
Arijit Singh’s decision comes at a time when his songs continue to dominate music charts and film soundtracks, making his exit from playback singing a significant moment for the Hindi film music industry.
