New Delhi: The Centre has made it clear that the February 28 deadline to implement ‘SIM binding’ rules will not be extended. Under the new norms, from March 1, users must have the same SIM card in their mobile phone as the number linked to messaging apps such as WhatsApp and others.
If a phone does not have the active SIM linked to the registered number, messaging platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, ShareChat and JioChat will stop functioning.
This means users will no longer be able to operate these apps on a device using only Wi-Fi without inserting the linked SIM card.
What changes for computer users
The new rule will also impact users accessing messaging services on desktops or laptops. WhatsApp accounts logged in on computers will automatically log out every six hours. Users will then have to scan the QR code again to log in.
Why the rule is being implemented
The government believes the move will help curb cybercrime and track fraudsters more effectively. Officials say linking app access strictly with an active SIM will enhance digital security and curb misuse through fake or unverified accounts.
The step is aimed at strengthening digital safety frameworks and tightening checks on anonymous or fraudulent messaging activity.
