New Delhi: The Central government has imposed a ban on the upcoming web series ‘Lawrence of Punjab’, a move confirmed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The decision came after a public interest petition filed by Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who sought a stay on the release of the series based on the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
During the hearing, the Centre informed the court that an official order blocking the series had already been issued.
Concerns over crime portrayal
Earlier, Punjab Police had also written to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging a ban. The police flagged concerns that the series depicts Bishnoi’s criminal journey, including references to high-profile crimes such as the killing of Sidhu Moosewala.
Authorities warned that the content could glorify crime and negatively influence young viewers.
Release halted on OTT platform
The series was scheduled to release on ZEE5 on April 27. However, following the Centre’s intervention, its release has now been stopped.
Officials noted that strong reactions from various sections of society also played a role in the decision, with concerns that the show could promote criminal culture.
