Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Housing Board on Monday launched a demolition drive against illegal constructions and structural violations, triggering protests in the city.
Teams, accompanied by heavy police deployment, carried out action in Sector 45, where four houses were being demolished. Residents opposed the move, and some protesters were taken into custody before the demolition began.
The drive targets houses built on government land or those modified without approval, especially where structural safety norms were violated. Officials said the action could impact nearly 60,000 families across multiple sectors.
The development comes a day after an all-party meeting was held in Sector 41, attended by leaders from BJP, Congress and AAP. A joint committee was formed to hold talks with the administration, but the demolition drive began before any discussion could take place.
The action is linked to CWP No. 2309 of 2014. In an order dated April 21, 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed that residents who altered pillars, foundations or balconies, thereby weakening structures, must restore them within a month and ensure safety compliance.
Authorities said if repairs are carried out by the Housing Board, the cost will be recovered from the allottees.
The most affected sectors include 41-A, 41-D, 45-A, 45-C, 45-D, 46, 47-C, 39-B and 29-B. Strict action is now being taken against those who failed to submit structural safety certificates despite prior notices.
