Punjab Congress rift deepens as Channi holds show of strength, Randhawa meets Amit Shah

Chandigarh: Amid the ongoing infighting within the Punjab Congress, political activity in the state intensified on Friday as former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi held a meeting with his supporters at Chamkaur Sahib, while senior Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.

The two parallel developments have fuelled fresh political speculation in Punjab, especially after the recent organisational reshuffle within the state Congress ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Speaking to the media after his meeting with Amit Shah, Randhawa clarified that the discussion was solely focused on the deteriorating law and order situation and the growing menace of gangsters in Punjab. He said he had earlier written to the Union Home Ministry on the issue and met the Home Minister to discuss the matter in detail.

Randhawa stressed that the meeting was aimed at raising concerns over Punjab’s security situation and seeking appropriate intervention regarding the increasing incidents of organised crime in the state.

When asked about Charanjit Singh Channi’s meeting with party supporters and the ongoing differences within the Punjab Congress, Randhawa declined to comment. He said only Channi could explain the purpose of his meeting and the reasons behind it.

The developments come at a time when the Punjab Congress is witnessing heightened internal activity following the party’s recent organisational restructuring, with several senior leaders seen positioning themselves ahead of the next Assembly elections.
