São Paulo: A 21-year-old woman died during a bungee jumping activity in Brazil’s São Paulo state after allegedly being allowed to jump without a safety rope attached, according to local media reports.

The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was participating in a bungee jumping event organised by a private company when the fatal accident occurred at Skeleton Bridge.

According to reports, staff members escorted Freitas to the edge of the bridge and instructed her to jump. However, moments after she leapt, it became apparent that the safety rope had not been secured.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, reportedly shows onlookers and staff suddenly realising the mistake and shouting, “Rope… rope…” as the young woman plunged more than 130 feet into the gorge below.

Despite efforts to respond, Freitas suffered fatal injuries in the fall.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have taken six people into custody for questioning. Authorities are examining whether negligence or safety protocol violations contributed to the tragedy.

The case has sparked widespread concern over safety standards at adventure sports events, with investigators expected to review the procedures followed by the event organisers.

Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
