Bathinda: Padamjit Mehta, the 28-year-old son of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) president Amarjit Singh Mehta, has been elected Mayor of Bathinda for a second consecutive term. He was elected unopposed from Ward No. 46 in the Municipal Corporation elections.
A postgraduate from the United Kingdom, Padamjit first became Mayor in February 2025 despite being the lone Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor in the 50-member House, where the Congress then held a majority.
His re-election marks a significant political development in the city’s civic administration and further strengthens AAP’s position in Bathinda.
During the previous mayoral election, Bathinda Urban MLA Jagrup Singh Gill had voted in favour of Congress candidate Baljinder Singh ‘Thekedaar’, arguing that AAP had not officially announced a candidate for the post at the time.
However, Gill remained absent from both the mayoral election proceedings and a press conference addressed by Punjab Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian following the latest election.
Padamjit’s unopposed victory and return as Mayor are being viewed as an important development in Bathinda’s municipal politics, with the young leader set to continue overseeing the city’s civic administration. :::
