Chandigarh: Nomination papers of Sukhwinder Singh Billa, husband of Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, were rejected during scrutiny on Sunday ahead of the upcoming Jagraon Municipal Council Elections.
Billa had filed his nomination from Ward No. 1 of Jagraon Municipal Council, which is reserved for women candidates.
Returning Officer Ravi Kumar said the nomination was rejected because a male candidate cannot contest from a women-reserved ward under election rules.
The issue drew attention in political circles as the candidate is linked to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
Apart from Billa, nomination papers of three independent candidates were also rejected during scrutiny.
Pradeep Singh from Ward No. 9 was disqualified for being below 21 years of age.
Sukhmander Singh from Ward No. 11 had his nomination rejected due to the absence of a BC certificate.
Manmohan Kaur from Ward No. 22 was disqualified over incomplete documentation.
Election officials said all rejections were carried out strictly in accordance with election rules and procedures.
