Actor-politician Vijay to become next Tamil Nadu chief minister after securing majority support

New Delhi: Vijay is set to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, bringing an end to the political uncertainty surrounding government formation in the state.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has reportedly given Vijay the go-ahead to form the government. According to party sources, the actor-turned-politician is likely to take oath as chief minister tomorrow.

Vijay submits support letters from alliance partners

Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan for the third consecutive day on Friday and formally staked claim to form the government.

During the meeting, he submitted letters of support from a total of 118 MLAs, including legislators from his party TVK along with the Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and VCK.

TVK emerges as largest party in Assembly elections

In the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK won 108 out of the 234 seats.

Vijay himself won from two constituencies, which means he will have to vacate one seat. As a result, the party’s effective strength in the Assembly will stand at 107 MLAs.

However, with the support of five Congress MLAs and two legislators each from CPI, CPI(M) and VCK, TVK managed to cross the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government.

Vijay’s rise marks major political shift in Tamil Nadu

Vijay’s elevation to the chief minister’s post marks a major political development in Tamil Nadu, where regional parties have traditionally dominated the political landscape.

Political observers believe the support extended by opposition allies played a crucial role in enabling TVK to secure the numbers needed to stake claim to power.
