New Delhi: Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata amid speculation over the formation of a BJP government in West Bengal. He was received at the airport by BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya along with senior party leaders including Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, Rahul Sinha and Sukanta Majumdar.
After landing, Shah visited Dakshineswar Kali Temple and offered prayers before heading to the Novotel Hotel in New Town.
A meeting of the BJP legislature party is scheduled to take place at 2 pm today at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, where the leader of the legislature party will be elected.
Shah is expected to chair the meeting, which will be attended by all 207 newly elected BJP MLAs. The leader chosen during the meeting is set to become West Bengal’s first BJP chief minister.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground and is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior NDA leaders.
Suvendu Adhikari is currently being seen as the frontrunner for the chief minister’s post. He defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from the Bhabanipur constituency and also retained Nandigram for a second consecutive term. Adhikari had earlier defeated Banerjee from Nandigram in the 2021 Assembly elections as well.
