New Delhi: The satirical Cockroach Janta Party has officially overtaken the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Instagram followers. As of Thursday, the Cockroach Janta Party handle had amassed 10.9 million followers, surpassing the BJP’s 8.7 million followers on the platform.
The campaign achieved the milestone within just four days of its launch. While the BJP account has built its presence through more than 18,000 posts, the Cockroach Janta Party reached its record-breaking following with only 56 posts.
The Cockroach Janta Party was founded by 30-year-old political communication strategist Abhijeet Dipke, who is currently studying at Boston University.
The campaign emerged as a viral response to controversial remarks allegedly made by India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant during a court hearing, in which unemployed youth were reportedly compared to “cockroaches” and “parasites.” The remarks triggered widespread criticism online and fuelled the rapid growth of the satirical movement.
