Chandigarh: Local body election activity officially began in Punjab on Sunday after the Punjab State Election Commission announced the schedule for elections to urban local bodies across the state.
Punjab State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri said polling for eight municipal corporations, 76 municipal councils and 21 nagar panchayats will be held on May 26.
The counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on May 29.
Nomination process to begin from May 13
According to the election schedule, nomination papers for the local body elections can be filed between May 13 and May 16.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on May 18, while candidates will be allowed to withdraw nominations on May 19.
Voting across the state will then take place on May 26.
Security arrangements and preparations completed
The State Election Commission said all necessary preparations for the elections have been completed.
Officials added that a detailed security strategy has also been prepared to ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of polling under strict security arrangements.
