Chandigarh: Signs of internal dissent have surfaced in the Punjab BJP following the appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as the party’s new state president, with senior leader Jagmohan Raju stepping down from the post of state general secretary.

Raju’s resignation comes days after former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh publicly expressed reservations over Dhillon’s appointment, fuelling speculation about differences within the state unit.

While Raju has not publicly elaborated on the reasons behind his decision, political observers view the move as another indication of growing unease among a section of party leaders over the recent leadership reshuffle.

In his resignation letter, Raju said he had been given the opportunity to serve the party over the past four years as Punjab BJP vice-president and later as general secretary. He described the period as one of the most significant and enriching phases of his political journey.

Party leaders, however, maintain that organisational changes are a routine process and that the BJP remains focused on strengthening its base ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

The latest development has intensified discussions within political circles about the impact of the leadership transition on the party’s strategy and internal dynamics in Punjab.
