Chandigarh: A 29-year-old youth was shot dead during a pigeon flying tournament in Tarn Taran on Saturday after unidentified assailants allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on him.
The deceased was identified as Gurpreet Singh Gora, a resident of Jhugia Kalu village.
According to preliminary information, Gurpreet had reached the village to participate in a pigeon tournament. During the event, one of his pigeons reportedly flew into the courtyard of a nearby house.
Police said Gurpreet entered the house to retrieve the pigeon when attackers, who were allegedly already lying in wait, surrounded him and fired four rounds at close range.
Three bullets struck him in the chest and he died on the spot.
Family members said Gurpreet was the only brother among four sisters and worked as a labourer in Bahadurnagar Mandi village.
Police have launched an investigation into the murder and are trying to identify the attackers and motive behind the shooting.
