Patiala: Dismissed Punjab Police AIG Rajjit Singh surrendered before Patiala Police on Thursday, September 24, after remaining absconding for nearly three years. Police formally arrested him after he surrendered. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed the arrest.
Cases related to drug trafficking, extortion and disproportionate assets were registered against Rajjit Singh in 2019. He was dismissed from service in April 2023 and subsequently went underground.
His name surfaced during an investigation by an SIT constituted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court into an alleged drug trafficking and extortion network linked to dismissed inspector Inderjit Singh.
The Vigilance Bureau and Special Task Force subsequently registered separate cases against him. He went absconding after the High Court rejected his bail plea, and a lookout circular was also issued in his case.
Investigation reports contained allegations that Rajjit Singh had allegedly provided protection to drug traffickers, implicated innocent people in drug cases and extorted money from them. A disproportionate assets case was also registered against him. The High Court records described these as allegations that emerged during the investigation.
More than 50 NDPS samples failed
The investigation also raised the issue of more than 50 NDPS samples failing during the period when Rajjit Singh was SSP Tarn Taran and Inderjit Singh was posted as CIA in-charge.
Based on the SIT reports, the Punjab government dismissed Rajjit Singh from police service in April 2023.
