Chandigarh: As devastating floods continue to batter Assam, claiming around 75 lives and affecting lakhs of people, volunteers and social organisations from Punjab have travelled thousands of kilometres to assist relief and rescue operations in the worst-hit districts.
Teams comprising volunteers, youth groups and social organisations from Punjab have reached Sivasagar, Charaideo and Dibrugarh, where they are providing humanitarian assistance to flood-affected families.
The volunteers are distributing dry ration, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies to stranded residents, while also using boats to evacuate elderly people, women and children to safer locations.
At Gurdwara Sahib in Sivasagar, volunteers from Punjab, along with the local Sikh community, have organised a 24-hour community kitchen (langar) to provide free meals to thousands of people affected by the floods.
Medical teams are also conducting free health camps in flood-hit areas and distributing medicines to help prevent waterborne diseases.
The relief work by Punjab-based volunteers has been widely appreciated as an example of humanitarian service during one of Assam’s worst flood crises in recent years.
