Chandigarh: Supporters and leaders of Waris Punjab De on Wednesday began a large march in Chandigarh, demanding the immediate release of the outfit’s chief Amritpal Singh and Sikh prisoners referred to by supporters as “Bandi Singhs”, who are lodged in various jails across the country.
Thousands of protesters from Mullanpur Dakha and other parts of Punjab assembled at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali before marching towards the Punjab Chief Minister’s residence.
The march follows an appeal made a day earlier by Waris Punjab De leader Manpreet Singh Iyali, who urged youth and the general public to extend support to the campaign seeking the release of Amritpal Singh and the prisoners.
According to Iyali, around 500 vehicles from Dakha and adjoining areas joined the procession to Chandigarh.
He appealed to participants to ensure that the protest remained entirely peaceful and urged them to maintain law and order while avoiding any form of violence.
In a post on his Facebook page, Iyali said it was the duty of responsible citizens to raise their voice for what he described as their “rights and legitimate demands”, while stressing that the agitation should remain peaceful.
