Kapurthala: Subhanpur SHO Amandeep Singh was seriously injured after a group of youths allegedly attacked him while he was trying to stop them from creating a disturbance at a bus stand near the police station.
According to police, the SHO suffered a serious head injury and required six to seven stitches. He has since recovered and returned to duty after undergoing treatment for several days. The incident took place about a week ago.
Kapurthala Police have arrested two people in connection with the attack, while efforts are underway to trace the others. The arrested suspects have been identified as Karandeep Singh, a resident of Dadwindi village in Sultanpur Lodhi, and Arya, a resident of Khassan village in Bhulath.
A case has been registered at Subhanpur police station under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions.
According to police, the incident occurred on September 13, when the SHO noticed several people allegedly drinking alcohol and creating a disturbance at the bus stand opposite Subhanpur police station. The group had reportedly placed liquor bottles and other items on top of a vehicle and were allegedly creating a commotion at a spot used by passengers boarding and getting off buses.
Police said that when the SHO approached the group and asked them to stop causing a disturbance in the public place, some of the youths allegedly attacked him. One person reportedly struck the SHO on the head with an iron kara, causing the injury.
Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said seven to eight people allegedly attacked the SHO when he attempted to stop them from creating a disturbance. He said the individuals appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants and added that the possibility of drug use could not be ruled out.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Jalandhar, a man travelling in a Scorpio SUV allegedly attempted to open fire at police personnel during a routine checking operation at a checkpoint under the Jandiala police post. Police personnel managed to overpower and apprehend him.
