Chandigarh: A major change has been made in the selection of DGP. The Punjab Assembly has passed the Punjab Police Amendment Bill 2023.
A panel will be formed for the selection of DGP in Punjab. Punjab will appoint its own police chief. Following the amendment, the state government has decided to adopt a parallel mechanism to remove the control of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
As per procedure, after the DGP’s vacancy is announced, the state will send the names of all eligible officers to the UPSC, which will appoint a three-member panel to select the candidate for the top job.
