Washington: US President Donald Trump has said a ceasefire in Ukraine will be a key goal of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, set to take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage, Alaska.
Trump said that if an agreement is not reached, “he will not be happy.” The two leaders, meeting for the first time in six years, are expected to hold talks lasting six to seven hours, with the possibility of ending the war in Ukraine high on the agenda. The meeting is drawing global attention.
Trump admitted he was unsure how successful the summit would be. “We want the killings to stop and therefore it is very important to have a ceasefire,” he said. According to a Reuters report, when asked what would define success, Trump replied, “I can’t tell you that. I don’t know. There is no certainty. I want a few things, including a ceasefire.”
During the meeting, control of more than 10,000 nuclear weapons from both countries will be concentrated in one room. Putin will be accompanied by commandos from the Federal Protective Service’s special unit, who carry a range of specialised suitcases — from bulletproof-bombproof protective shields to excrement-urine kits and nuclear briefcases.
The Russian nuclear briefcase, known as “Cheget,” is named after Mount Cheget in the Caucasus Mountains. It enables the Russian president to authorise the use of nuclear weapons by sending a green-light signal to Moscow’s command centre. Although images of the briefcase are rare, photographs were once captured during Putin’s visit to China.
