Chandigarh: Punjab continues to reel under floods with official figures showing widespread destruction across 23 districts. According to the state government’s media bulletin issued on Tuesday total of 1,400 villages have been affected, impacting 3,54,626 people.
The bulletin said 30 people have lost their lives so far in the floods. Pathankot reported the highest toll with six deaths, followed by Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Mansa with three each. Other districts reporting casualties include Barnala (3), Bathinda (1), Gurdaspur (1), Ludhiana (1), Patiala (1), Rupnagar (3), SAS Nagar (1) and Sangrur (1).
The disaster has forced the evacuation of 19,597 people. Ferozepur alone accounted for 3,432 evacuees, followed by Amritsar (2,734), Fazilka (2,422) and Gurdaspur (581). Relief operations are underway with 74 relief camps active across the state, including 16 in Amritsar, 29 in Barnala and 10 in Fazilka.
The report added that animal loss and damage to houses and infrastructure could not yet be fully assessed. Authorities said the actual picture will emerge once the floodwaters recede, but initial inputs indicate a “huge loss of livestock” in the affected villages.
