Hindu groups hold protest in Jalandhar over ‘Love Mohammed’ row, demand arrest of accused

Jalandhar: Hindu organisations staged a sit-in at Shri Ram (Company Bagh) Chowk in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Saturday over the ongoing controversy surrounding Love Mohammed. Hindu leaders set up tents on the road and began reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, demanding the arrest of the accused.

The protesters said that police were given time till 11 am to take action, but no arrests had been made. They have now announced an indefinite dharna. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the area, while Muslim leaders have started gathering near Buta Mandi.

Meanwhile, bhajan singer Kanhaiya Mittal also joined the issue, writing on social media, “Tired of saying it, now understand the people of Jalandhar. Better late than never. I love Ram.”

Police have registered a case against Muslim leaders Ayub Khan, Nameen Khan and two others. Ayub Khan, who is currently with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and whose wife is a councillor from Basti, was formerly associated with the BJP, where he served as the in-charge of the party’s Muslim wing in Punjab.

His appointment was made by BJP Minority Morcha’s state president Thomas Masih. Khan has also been part of the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal in the past.
