Chandigarh: Ferozepur police carried out a late-night operation and arrested gangster-turned-politician Gurpreet Singh Sekhon under preventive provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. Sekhon was arrested under Sections 7 and 51 of the CrPC for maintenance of peace and was taken to Kulgarhi police station.
Sekhon was released from jail two years ago after which he claimed to have distanced himself from criminal activities and began engaging in social service in his locality. He later entered politics. At present, two members of his family are contesting the Zilla Parishad elections as independent candidates with support from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Hours before his arrest, Sekhon uploaded a video on social media in which he speculated about possible police action. He alleged that the move was being carried out under pressure from the government.
In the video, Sekhon said that local leaders were feeling insecure due to the growing support he was receiving from people in the area. Police officials have not yet issued a detailed statement on the arrest.
