New Delhi: Opposition MPs on Thursday staged a protest march inside the Parliament House complex against the government’s proposed ‘G Ram Ji’ Bill and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
The MPs carried a large banner bearing pictures of Mahatma Gandhi with “Mahatma Gandhi NREGA” written on it. They marched from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar and raised slogans against the government.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the opposition would take the fight to the streets if the Bill was not withdrawn.
Several senior opposition leaders took part in the protest, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, DMK MPs Kanimozhi, T R Baalu and A Raja, IUML’s E T Mohammed Basheer, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant and RSP MP N K Premachandran.
Speaking to reporters, Venugopal said, “Today, Parliament is witnessing the murder of democracy. By removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from NREGA, they are trying to destroy democratic values and the ideology of the Father of the Nation.”
Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi also joined the protesting MPs and participated in the demonstration at Makar Dwar.
