CM Mann seeks DGP report after AAP sarpanch shot dead at wedding in Amritsar

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought a report from the Director General of Police after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch Jarmal Singh was shot dead during a wedding ceremony in Amritsar.

According to the police, two armed youths opened fire at Jarmal Singh when he was sitting at a table and having food with other guests at the Marigold Resort. The sudden attack triggered panic at the wedding venue. Jarmal Singh, a resident of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district, was the serving sarpanch and had attended the function as part of the bride’s side.

A video of the incident has surfaced and is being closely examined by the police to understand the planning behind the attack. The footage shows two youths entering the marriage palace calmly. One of the shooters can be seen with a mobile phone to his ear outside the venue, leading the police to suspect that someone present inside was relaying information to the attackers.

The assailants reportedly walked through the guests seated at multiple tables, reached Jarmal Singh and shot him from behind. Police said the manner in which the attack was carried out indicated that the shooters were professionals, as they showed no panic and did not even cover their faces.

A few hours after the incident, gangsters Donny Bal and Prabh Dasuwal claimed responsibility for the killing through a social media post. However, the police said they were investigating the case from multiple angles, including the possibility that someone may have used gangsters to settle a personal rivalry.

CM Bhagwant Mann spoke to DGP Gaurav Yadav and sought an update on the investigation. He directed the police to identify and arrest the attackers at the earliest. Meanwhile, AAP Punjab president and cabinet minister Aman Arora visited the sarpanch’s residence to express condolences to the family.
