Rejected in Punjab, Dilpreet Singh Bajwa rises to captain Canada’s T20 World Cup team

Chandigarh: Once overlooked in Punjab despite a match-winning century, cricketer Dilpreet Singh Bajwa has scripted a remarkable turnaround, becoming the captain of the Canada national cricket team within just three years. The Cricket Canada has entrusted him with leading the side for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Dilpreet began his cricketing journey in Punjab, where he played domestic cricket and even scored a brilliant 130-run knock in Patiala. However, despite consistent performances, he failed to secure selection in the Punjab Under-19 team, a setback that proved decisive. Disheartened by repeated rejection, his parents moved with him to Canada in 2020.

His passion for cricket continued overseas. Dilpreet first made his mark in Canadian club cricket before impressing in domestic competitions. A strong showing in the Global T20 Canada, where he represented the Montreal Tigers, brought him into the spotlight.

Hailing from Batala in Gurdaspur, Dilpreet took his initial training at the Government College ground under coach Rakesh Marshall. He represented Gurdaspur district in the Punjab inter-district Katoch Shield tournament—one of the key pathways to Ranji Trophy selection—but remained on the fringes despite strong performances.

In Canada, his development accelerated as he shared the dressing room with global stars such as Chris Gayle, Tim Southee, Carlos Brathwaite and Jimmy Neesham. Gayle, in particular, is said to have been impressed by Dilpreet’s batting and offered guidance during the tournament.

Rewarded for his consistent performances, Dilpreet earned his maiden call-up to Canada’s national side in 2023. Since then, he has continued to deliver, culminating in his appointment as captain for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Dilpreet’s journey—from rejection in Punjab to leading a national side on the world stage—stands as a striking example of perseverance, talent and second chances in modern cricket.
