AAP names Talbir Singh Gill as Majitha candidate for next Assembly polls

Chandigarh: The Aam Aadmi Party has announced Talbir Singh Gill as its candidate from Majitha for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made the announcement indirectly while addressing public programmes in Majitha on Sunday.

The party had appointed Gill as the Majitha constituency in-charge in July 2025. A former close aide of ex-Akali MLA Bikram Singh Majithia, Gill had earlier contested the 2022 Assembly elections from Amritsar South. He joined AAP on March 4, 2024, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mann.

AAP has recently registered a significant victory in Majitha in the district council and panchayat samiti elections, strengthening its organisational base in the constituency. With Gill now named as the party’s Assembly nominee, AAP is gearing up for a direct contest against opposition candidates in the next polls.

Addressing the gathering, Mann also targeted the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, alleging that it was functioning under the influence of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He claimed the SGPC was more focused on managing Akali Dal conferences than safeguarding Sikh interests.

Mann said it would have been better if the SGPC president acted as a “soldier of the Guru”, but alleged that the incumbent instead projected himself as a loyalist of the Akali Dal leadership.
