Trade unions, farmers call strike against India–US trade deal; services likely to be hit in Punjab today

Chandigarh: Trade unions, farmer groups and employee organisations observed a strike on Thursday against the recently announced India–US trade deal, raising the possibility of disruption in several government departments across Punjab.

Work in banks, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), Punjab Roadways, PRTC and Panbus may be affected as unions have announced protests and demonstrations in various cities. A final decision on the operation of buses will be taken by union leaders later in the day.

Employee unions of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited have declared a day-long strike. However, the power utility has warned that strict action may be taken against employees participating in the strike, including termination from service.

The strike has also received political backing in Punjab. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has directed its workers to support the bandh, while the Indian National Congress has extended nationwide support. Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal urged party workers to back the protest across the country.

Protesters have termed the trade agreement detrimental to farmers, workers and small businesses, alleging that it could impact domestic industries and agricultural interests. Further updates on the scale of disruption are awaited.
