Tarn Taran: A day after the murder of Thathian Mahantan village sarpanch and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harbrinder Singh, the Lakhbir Landa gang has claimed responsibility for the killing through a social media post.
Harbrinder Singh was shot dead at close range by two assailants during a wedding function on Wednesday. According to police, an AK-47 rifle was used in the attack. Nearly a month ago, another AAP sarpanch, Jhormal Singh of Valtoha village in Amritsar, was also shot dead during a wedding ceremony.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surinder Lamba said the case is being thoroughly investigated. He added that no angle of extortion or prior threats has surfaced so far, and the murder appears to be linked to old rivalry or revenge.
Police are verifying the authenticity of the gang’s viral social media post and have launched raids to trace the attackers.
Following the incident, the district police suspended Patti DSP Jagbir Singh and Sarhali SHO Gurvinder Singh on charges of negligence and lapses in security arrangements. The SSP assured that the accused would be arrested soon and brought to justice.
