Rajpura News: Member of the Punjab State and Union Territory of Chandigarh Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) Padma Shri Jitender Singh Shunty stated that the doors of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission are always open for victims seeking justice. During a human rights awareness program held in Rajpura by Human Rights Watch organization, he emphasized that the Commission is fully committed to protecting human rights across Punjab and Chandigarh. Shunty held a meeting with ADC Ismat Vijay Singh, SDM Naman Markan, SP Swaranjit Kaur, DSP Manjit Singh and other officials from various departments, directing them to improve services and ensure quick resolution of public complaints. He assured that action on any written complaint would be taken within two days and also shared a helpline number, 9855475547, for registering grievances.
He informed that the Commission has issued strict guidelines to all government and private hospitals, instructing them not to withhold dead bodies under any circumstances, even if bills are unpaid, as it violates human dignity. Hospitals must also maintain proper mortuary and ambulance services and provide support for free or subsidized cremation or burial in the case of unclaimed or economically weak families. Instructions have also been issued to ensure insurance and safety measures for sanitation workers. Shunty said that such awareness camps help bring the Commission closer to people and added that medical negligence will not be tolerated.
He also mentioned that his organization has performed nearly 70,000 cremations over the past 30 years, including during the COVID-19 period, following the principles of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, for which he was awarded the Padma Shri. Taking inspiration from the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji for human rights, Shunty reiterated his commitment to safeguarding human rights and noted that tragedies like those of 1947 and 1984 lacked justice due to the absence of a dedicated human rights commission. On this occasion, Rajpura Unit President Harpreet Singh Choji and Senior Vice President Shiv Kumar Bhura, Baldev Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bedi, Charanjit Singh Bedi and a large number of other dignitaries were present.
