United Kingdom rolls out digital travel system; eVisa, ETA mandatory for Indian travellers

London: The United Kingdom has implemented a new digital travel system, introducing key changes for Indian travellers. Under the updated rules, Indian visa holders will use a digital eVisa, while travellers from visa-exempt countries must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to the UK.

The move replaces traditional paper visa stickers with a fully digital system.

No need to leave passport during processing

Under the new process, applicants must still visit a visa application centre for biometric registration. However, they will no longer be required to leave their passports at the centre during visa processing.

The UK government has clarified that airlines may deny boarding to passengers who do not possess a valid digital eVisa, ETA, or other approved travel documents.

BRP and visa stickers replaced

Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), passport visa stickers, and ink stamps have now been transitioned to the online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) system.

All eVisa holders must ensure that their passport details are updated in their UKVI account to avoid travel disruptions.

ETA details

Nationals from 85 countries — including the United States, Canada and France — who previously did not require a visa must now obtain an ETA before travelling.

ETA fee: £16

Validity: Two years or until passport expiry (whichever is earlier)

UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp has urged travellers to secure the correct digital authorisation in advance to ensure smooth entry into the country.
