Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has removed Giani Raghbir Singh from the post of Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib with immediate effect.
The decision was taken after the 72-hour ultimatum issued to him by the SGPC expired. The Sikh body had asked him to furnish evidence supporting the allegations he had levelled.
Announcement by SGPC President
The announcement was made during a press conference by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami. The action follows a notice served to Giani Raghbir Singh seeking clarification and proof regarding the claims he had made against the institution.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Dhami said that statements made by Giani Raghbir Singh in recent days had raised serious concerns. He stated that making allegations without substantiated evidence while holding the respected position of Head Granthi had adversely affected the image of the SGPC.
Decision to protect institutional credibility
According to the SGPC, the decision was not taken out of personal animosity but to safeguard the credibility of the institution. The committee emphasized that anyone serving as Head Granthi at Sri Harmandir Sahib holds a highly responsible and revered position, where every public statement carries significant weight.
Dhami added that unverified allegations create confusion among the Sikh sangat, and therefore the committee deemed it necessary to take strict action to maintain institutional integrity.
