Chandigarh: Punjab Police has arrested fugitive MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who had been absconding since September 2 last year, in a major breakthrough after months of search operations.
A lookout notice had earlier been issued against the MLA. According to a Punjab government spokesperson, all attempts to evade the law have now failed, and the accused will be produced in court for further legal proceedings.
The arrest is being seen as a significant success for Punjab Police, as it comes within 48 hours of another high-profile arrested of former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar in a separate case.
Sources said Patiala Police carried out a carefully planned and secret operation to arrest Pathanmajra near Patiala. He had reportedly re-entered India via Nepal, taking advantage of his fugitive status after the lookout notice was issued. It is also learnt that he later offered to surrender.
SSP Varun Sharma said the arrest was made possible after a coordinated effort led by SP Vaibhav Chaudhary, with multiple police teams working over the past 48 hours. Police had earlier conducted raids across seven states, but the accused had managed to evade arrest.
Officials said the action sends a strong message that no one is above the law and that efforts to deliver justice will continue, regardless of position or influence.
