Former Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek under scanner as RCMP seizes devices in corruption probe

Toronto: Former Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek is under investigation in an alleged corruption and breach of trust case linked to Calgary City Hall, with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intensifying its probe.

Acting on a search warrant, RCMP officials conducted a raid at Gondek’s residence and seized her mobile phone and other electronic devices as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case stems from a complaint filed in October 2025, alleging irregularities in decision-making processes at Calgary City Hall and claims that certain individuals or entities were given undue benefits.

Investigators suspect a lack of transparency in key decisions taken during Gondek’s tenure from 2021 to 2025. Officials believe digital communication records, including emails and messages, could provide crucial evidence regarding internal discussions and possible influence in decision-making.

Sources said the probe is not limited to the former mayor, with devices of other councillors and officials also reportedly seized. All individuals involved have expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigation.

The RCMP clarified that the action is part of an ongoing inquiry and no charges have been filed so far. Authorities said further legal steps will depend on the evidence gathered during the examination of digital data.
