No power cuts in Punjab after May 1, says minister amid surge in demand

New Delhi: Sanjeev Arora, Punjab’s power minister, has said there will be no electricity cuts in the state after May 1, offering relief to residents facing outages over the past few days.

Demand surge behind outages

Speaking in Chandigarh, Arora said the recent power cuts were triggered by an unusual spike in demand due to extreme heat across the country. He noted that electricity demand in Punjab crossed 12,000 MW in April—an unprecedented level for this time of the year.

He assured that the state’s power department has made adequate arrangements to ensure uninterrupted supply going forward.

Relief measures for industry

To manage demand, the government has allowed industries to procure electricity from the open market during night hours without any additional charges. Industrial units can purchase power between 6 pm and 6 am based on their requirements.

The move is aimed at easing pressure on the grid while maintaining steady supply for domestic consumers.
