Around 30 patients flee from government de-addiction centre in Moga

Chandigarh: Around 30 patients escaped from a government de-addiction centre in Moga after allegedly breaking the main gate lock at the facility located in village Janer. The incident created panic inside the centre, where patients reportedly also scuffled with staff members and security guards before fleeing. The entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the centre.

According to information, the dispute began at the government-run de-addiction centre falling under the jurisdiction of Kot Ise Khan Police Station after an argument broke out between patients undergoing treatment and staff members. The situation soon escalated, with some patients becoming aggressive.

The youths allegedly pushed aside security personnel, broke the lock of the main gate and escaped from the premises.

Sources said a total of 95 patients were admitted to the de-addiction centre. Of them, nearly 30 managed to flee, while the remaining patients stayed inside the facility. Security guards claimed that the patients assaulted them during the incident. Although a few escapees were caught on the spot, many succeeded in fleeing.

Police from Punjab Police and senior officials immediately reached the scene after the incident. CCTV footage from the centre and nearby areas has been taken into custody for investigation.

Police teams are conducting raids in nearby areas and at possible hideouts to trace the absconding patients. Statements of the de-addiction centre staff have been recorded, and further legal action is underway.
