Former judge says ready to record statement in Twisha Sharma dowry death case

New Delhi: Former judge Giribala Singh, who has been named in the alleged dowry harassment case linked to the death of her daughter-in-law Twisha Sharma, on Saturday said she was willing to record her statement but claimed that Bhopal Police had not yet contacted her.

Singh also cited the chaotic situation outside her residence, apparently referring to the presence of media personnel, as the reason for her inability to step out of her home.

A day earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had issued notice to Singh on petitions seeking cancellation of her anticipatory bail and sought her response by May 25. Two days ago, Bhopal Police had reportedly issued a third and final notice asking her to appear for recording of statements.

Speaking over the phone, the former chairperson of the Bhopal District Consumer Court said, “I cannot venture out of my home. Yesterday (Friday), a car hit my advocate. I cannot step out at all due to the situation outside. I will be happy to give my statement.”

She further stated that she had emailed the Police Commissioner regarding the matter and claimed that police officials had told her they would come to her residence, but had not contacted her yet.

Meanwhile, a day earlier, Twisha’s absconding lawyer husband Samarth Singh withdrew his anticipatory bail plea filed before the High Court and later appeared before a district court in Jabalpur to surrender. A Bhopal Police team subsequently took him into custody and left for the state capital.

The case relates to the death of 33-year-old Noida-based model-turned-actress Twisha Sharma, who was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12.

While her in-laws have alleged that she was addicted to drugs, her parental family has accused the family of harassing her for dowry, leading to her death.
