New Delhi: A 15-year-old girl in Iraq was allegedly killed by members of her own family after refusing to marry a relative against her wishes, according to local reports and rights activists. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across social media and renewed concerns over forced marriages and so-called “honour” crimes in the country.
The victim, identified as Kawthar Bashar Al-Husaijawi, was reportedly from the Al-Nahrawan area on the outskirts of Baghdad. Reports claim she had opposed a proposed marriage to a cousin and had repeatedly expressed her unwillingness to enter the relationship.
According to accounts cited by local activists, the teenager had previously been withdrawn from school and subjected to a forced marriage at a young age. After allegedly enduring abuse, she later sought to end the marriage through legal channels.
The case drew further attention after videos circulated online purportedly showing groups of men celebrating following the girl’s death. The authenticity of the videos and the circumstances surrounding them are being examined, but the footage has intensified public anger and calls for accountability.
Women’s rights advocates and civil society groups have condemned the incident and urged Iraqi authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, prosecute those responsible and strengthen protections for girls facing forced marriages and domestic violence.
The case has once again highlighted concerns raised by human rights organisations about the vulnerability of women and minors in situations involving family pressure, forced marriages and gender-based violence.
Authorities have not yet released a detailed public statement on the investigation.
