Paraguay knock Germany out on penalties, create World Cup history

Washington: Paraguay scripted one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Germany 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash, ending the four-time champions’ campaign.

After the match remained locked at 1-1 following regulation time, the contest was decided from the penalty spot. José Canale converted the winning penalty to send Paraguay into the Round of 16 and seal one of the most memorable victories in the country’s football history.

The defeat marked Germany’s earliest knockout-stage exit in 12 years and ended their hopes of winning a fifth World Cup title. The result is also expected to increase scrutiny over head coach Julian Nagelsmann following the disappointing campaign.

For Paraguay, the victory represents a landmark achievement as the South American side advances to the next round with renewed confidence after eliminating one of the tournament favourites.
