Amritsar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Tarun Chugh has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. Following the official declaration by the returning officer, Chugh was handed over the certificate of election.

Along with Chugh, BJP candidates Rajneesh Agrawal and Mahesh Kewat were also elected unopposed to the Upper House. Chugh’s path to the Rajya Sabha became easier after Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination papers were rejected.

The election marks a significant political milestone for Chugh, a senior BJP leader from Amritsar, whose name had been doing the rounds for a Rajya Sabha berth for some time. With his election now confirmed, he is expected to shoulder a dual responsibility of representing the interests of Madhya Pradesh in Parliament while also living up to the expectations of his home state Punjab and his native city Amritsar.

The development is being seen as a proud moment for Amritsar, as Chugh becomes the fifth prominent leader from the city to serve in the Rajya Sabha. Several distinguished leaders from Amritsar have previously represented the region in the Upper House.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Gurmukh Singh Musafir, a three-time Lok Sabha MP, later represented the region in the Rajya Sabha. He was followed by senior Congress leader Abdul Dar. Subsequently, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Raj Mohinder Singh Majithia served in the Upper House, raising key Punjab-related issues.

Former Amritsar Mayor and BJP leader Shwait Malik also represented the city in the Rajya Sabha and worked on various parliamentary committees while advocating issues related to the border district.

With Chugh’s election, expectations have risen among people in Amritsar and Punjab. BJP leadership has reposed faith in him by nominating him to the Upper House, and political observers believe his tenure will be closely watched for how effectively he addresses issues concerning both Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
