New Delhi: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday termed the Allahabad High Court order directing an FIR against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in an alleged dual citizenship case as “surprising and unnecessary.”
Reacting to the development, Gehlot said the allegations of British citizenship against Gandhi are baseless and that ordering an FIR places an “unwarranted burden” on the executive.
“It is surprising that the High Court has ordered an FIR to probe unsubstantiated claims. This amounts to putting unnecessary pressure on the executive,” he said.
Gehlot also pointed out that similar petitions had been dismissed earlier, including by the Allahabad High Court in July 2025 and by the Supreme Court in 2019.
On Friday, the Lucknow bench of the High Court had directed registration of an FIR based on a petition filed by a BJP worker, alleging that Rahul Gandhi held UK citizenship and was associated with a company named Backops Ltd, registered in August 2003.
