Melbourne: The Australia government has introduced strict new measures against private vocational education and training colleges enrolling international students as part of a major crackdown on visa misuse and low-quality institutions.
Under the new rules, several newly established private colleges and English-language institutes will be barred from enrolling international students or launching new courses for the next 12 months.
The move is aimed at curbing fake colleges, violations of visa regulations and institutions allegedly operating below education standards.
Following the government’s decision, the Australian Skills Quality Authority has intensified scrutiny of existing private colleges. Authorities will conduct detailed audits covering student attendance, genuine enrolments, quality of education, activities of education agents and financial records of institutions.
Colleges found violating regulations or failing to meet standards could face immediate cancellation of approval and restrictions on enrolling overseas students.
The government has also tightened student visa rules. International students will now be required to provide stronger financial proof and higher bank fund evidence while applying for visas.
Visa authorities will closely examine whether applicants genuinely intend to study in Australia or are primarily seeking work opportunities.
Special monitoring will also be carried out on visitors attempting to switch from tourist visas to student visas and students frequently changing courses.
Education experts believe the stricter regulations may push more international students towards government institutions and reputed universities, while private colleges could face growing challenges in attracting foreign students.
The policy changes are also expected to impact student visa approval rates in the coming months.
