New Delhi: A violent dispute allegedly linked to illegal sand mining in Chhattisgarh’s Koriya district left three people dead, including a BJP leader and former Janpad Panchayat president, police said.
The incident took place in Naugai village under the Sonhat police station area. According to preliminary investigations, a group of individuals allegedly associated with illegal sand mining intercepted the victims’ SUV while they were travelling through the area.
Police said the attackers blocked the vehicle’s path and allegedly set it on fire following a confrontation believed to be connected to a long-standing rivalry. One victim died at the scene, while two others suffered severe burn injuries.
The injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment but later succumbed to their injuries, taking the death toll to three.
Among those killed was a BJP leader and former Janpad Panchayat president, bringing significant political attention to the case.
The incident triggered tension in the area, prompting a large police deployment. Authorities have launched an investigation and are searching for those involved in the attack.
Officials said all possible angles are being examined, including disputes related to illegal sand mining operations and previous enmity between the parties. Police have assured strict action against those found responsible.
The killings have once again highlighted concerns over illegal mining activities and the violence often associated with such operations in the region.
