New Delhi: Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president J.P. Nadda in New Delhi on Saturday, triggering fresh political speculation in Punjab.
The meetings come at a time when reports of Amarinder Singh’s displeasure over recent organisational changes in the Punjab BJP have been making headlines. Political observers have closely watched his response to the appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as the party’s new state president.
Amarinder Singh had earlier publicly expressed reservations over the decision, stating that he was not consulted before the appointment was made. His remarks led to speculation about differences within the state unit and prompted discussions regarding his future political plans.
The former chief minister’s meetings with Shah and Nadda have further intensified political chatter, with some quarters linking the developments to ongoing debates over the BJP’s strategy in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
In recent weeks, rumours have also surfaced suggesting a possible return of Amarinder Singh to the Congress party. However, BJP leaders have repeatedly dismissed such claims and maintained that the veteran leader remains committed to the party.
Neither the BJP leadership nor Amarinder Singh has issued an official statement regarding the agenda of Saturday’s meetings. Party sources, however, described the interactions as part of regular political consultations.
Amarinder Singh joined the BJP in 2022 after ending his long association with the Congress and remains one of Punjab’s most prominent political figures.
