Chandigarh: Two Shiromani Akali Dal workers were injured during a clash between workers of the Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal during the Nagar Council election in Majitha.
Following allegations that Akali workers were not being heard by police, senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia reached the spot and was seen engaging in a heated argument with Amritsar Rural SSP Suhail Mir Qasim.
When Majithia arrived at Majitha police station, AAP constituency in-charge Talbir Singh Gill also reached there. During the confrontation, Majithia accused the police of acting like puppets of the government, while the SSP denied any bias and maintained that police were functioning impartially.
Majithia alleged that when a Sikh youth’s turban was removed and his religious sentiments were insulted, yet the injured youth was forced to plead for justice before police without getting relief, it reflected a complete collapse of law and order in Majitha.
He further claimed that the SSP was no longer acting as an officer of law but had become a puppet of the AAP government. According to Majithia, hooliganism, intimidation and lawlessness were openly taking place in Majitha because the police were more concerned about protecting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s chair than ensuring justice.
On the other hand, AAP leader Talbir Singh Gill accused Majithia of deliberately disturbing the atmosphere. He alleged that Majithia had brought outsiders and miscreants to the area and had attacked AAP workers. Gill also claimed that attempts were made to forcibly push one of their workers into a vehicle.
Rejecting allegations regarding the turban incident, Gill said nobody had removed the worker’s turban and that it had fallen off on its own during the commotion. He added that Majithia’s alleged strong-arm tactics would no longer be tolerated.
The atmosphere in Majitha reportedly remained tense throughout the day amid heavy political confrontation and police presence.
