Punjab bus services hit as contract workers launch indefinite strike against privatisation move

Chandigarh: Commuters across Punjab are likely to face inconvenience on Wednesday as buses operated by Punjab Roadways and PUNBUS remain off the roads due to an indefinite strike called by contract employees.

The protest, which began over the inclusion of private buses under the kilometre scheme, is expected to intensify further as contract drivers and conductors of the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) are also set to join the agitation.

The strike has been called under the banner of the Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers Union (Punjab), which has accused the government of moving towards the privatisation of public transport services.

Union leaders said the agitation was originally scheduled to take place later in the month but was advanced following the launch of five Volvo buses operating on the Chandigarh–Delhi Airport route under the kilometre scheme.

According to union representatives, the decision was taken after the state government flagged off the buses earlier this week. The workers claim the move signals a greater role for private operators in the state-run transport sector.

The union has demanded that the government halt further expansion of the kilometre scheme and address concerns related to job security and the future of public transport services.

With the strike entering an indefinite phase, transport services across several districts are expected to remain affected. Authorities are monitoring the situation, while passengers have been advised to make alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Further discussions between employee representatives and the government are expected in an effort to resolve the impasse and restore normal bus operations.
